R&D Technician II - NGS Molecular

Location: Lenexa, KS

Job Summary and Purpose:

Apply general molecular biology methods to ensure timely processing and identification of bacterial and viral samples. Complete laboratory services to internal and external customers when requested. Participate in R&D projects as assigned.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

Molecular Assays - use and development

* Apply general molecular biology methods to identify relevant animal pathogens (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, Sanger DNA sequencing)

* Perform Next Generation Sequencing using long read technologies (Oxford Nanopore Technology) and short read technologies (Illumina)

* Work with various molecular instruments (nucleic acid extraction robots, conventional PCR thermocyclers, real-time PCR thermocyclers, mixers, incubators, freezers)

* Coordinate with internal departments to provide laboratory services when requested

* Investigate expanding capabilities of services offered internally and externally with new tech research

* Learn to operate, validate, and incorporate new technology into internal/external repertoire as it is acquired and installed

* Prepare reports as needed for customers

* Prepare project reports

* Participate in the design, optimization, validation of new PCR and sequencing methods

* Report progress to leadership team

Bioinformatics

* Analyze Sanger sequencing data

* Use commercial software (Geneious, Bionumerics) and open source software to analyze NGS data

* Present data and reports with relevant sequence analyses (phylogenetic trees, heat maps, SNP analysis)

* Teamwork with other R&D groups, Production Departments and Scientific Support/Product Support Personnel

* Assay development in support of new products

* Assist in projects related to Scientific Support/Product Support

* Contribute to training materials, protocols, and reports

* Provide training to new technicians, students, and interns

* Assist with animal studies

Documentation and Internal Quality Assurance

* Maintain sample and test database

* Maintain and review complete and accurate bench records following appropriate guidelines

* Contribute to and/or write SOPs and when necessary, develop record forms

Laboratory Maintenance

* Organize and maintain inventory records for freezers and contents

* Maintain laboratory and equipment cleaning schedules

* Maintain laboratory supplies, order reagents

* Adhere to appropriate safety requirements and protocols

Technical / Functional Competencies:

* Basic computer skills

o Operating systems - Windows, Mac, and/or Linux

o Microsoft Office or equivalent

o Bioinformatic analyses using Geneious Prime

* Basic microbiology skills (bacteriology and virology)

* Advanced molecular biology skills

* Knowledgeable about Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)

* Basic knowledge of animal infectious diseases

* Good communication skills - both written and verbal

Qualifications:

Education - master's in microbiology or biology or equivalent preferred or BA/BS in science related field, or equivalent with 1-3 years of relevant experience

Work Experience - 1-3 years of relevant experience:

* Advanced knowledge with molecular biology techniques is a necessity

* Intermediate knowledge in microbiology and chemistry a plus

* Assay development and validation (e.g. PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, and RT-qPCR) a plus

* Animal bacterial and/or virology disease model development a plus

Physical Requirements:

* Able to read, write legibly, and communicate in English

* Ability to lift up to 30 pounds

* Frequent standing for long periods of time

* Visual Inspection
