Job Description

Job Objective: The Community Ministry Director will provide outreach and leadership in programming for all community ministries and gym activities. This position will play a critical role in moving individuals from being uninvolved members of the community to becoming involved within The Salvation Army programs and corps.

Essential Functions:

Corps / Community Outreach:

  • Serve as liaison between Corps ministries and Community Outreach
  • Support and promote the ministry of the Eastside Corps through all ministry programs, including but not limited to Sunday Worship Services and Sunday School
  • Direct summer camp programming, including recruitment
  • Develop day camps and after-school programs according to community need
  • Serves as liaison to the corps pastoral care team
  • Assist with special events as needed

Community Outreach

  • Work closely with the Celebrate Recovery Director to establish a "Landing" program for youth in recovery
  • Serve on the Eastside Neighborhood Association Committee

Administration

  • Recruit, screen, interview, and makes recommendations for hire, termination, and other staffing adjustments of Community Center staff
  • Provide training on policies and procedures to new staff and volunteers for the Center
  • Participate in budget preparations as needed
  • Adhere to the Army's financial policies; makes equipment and supplies purchases as approved, process budget requests, and monitor program revenues and expenses ensuring adherence to budget
  • Supervise community service workers assigned to the Center, including recording and reporting hours worked, assigning tasks, training, and ensuring the tasks are completed as directed
  • Supervise volunteers assigned to the Center programs, including assigning work and evaluating performance; track and report volunteer hours to the supervisor; communicate program needs for volunteers
  • Generate Community Center statistical reports
  • Promote safety for all Center program participants and spectators by monitoring program areas to identify safety concerns with facilities, equipment, and behavior of guests; report all facility needs to the commanding officer
  • Ensure all Center supplies and equipment are in usable condition; notify the supervisor of necessary replacements/repairs, and attend to repair and replacement
  • Maintain Center incident reporting system
  • Assist the Corps Officer in soliciting donations for programs to sustain the center

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Minimum two years post-secondary education and Bible training; relevant experience and/or training, as determined by The Salvation Army, may be considered in lieu of education may be considered in lieu of education requirements

Experience: Demonstrated successful experience serving in youth or adult ministry with increasing levels of responsibility; experience providing program leadership to achieve program goals and objectives; experience serving in faith-based, social services organizations preferred

Certifications/Licenses: None

  • Knowledge of Salvation Army programs for all age groups and how they relate to the spiritual formation of individuals
  • Knowledge of how to effectively work with diversity in the workplace
  • Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher; MS Project and MS Access a plus

Supervisory Responsibility: Community service workers and volunteers as assigned

Physical Requirements: Include vision, hearing, and speaking; actively participating in indoor and outdoor activities; standing for long periods; walking, running, bending, reaching; lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel: Some travel to camps, events, workshops, and seminars as required

Driving: Driving is required. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office/community center environment and in the community, with some outdoor work required; evening and occasional weekend work will be required.

The Community Ministry Director is a ministry position and, as such, is expected to attend Sunday worship service and related activities at the Eastside Corps and agree to follow the tenants of The Salvation Army Soldier Covenant.
